A New Kingdom

Today, we are going to look at one of the most amazing chapters in all of the Bible.

Remember in chapter 19 how:
•Jesus comes to the earth to rescue Israel.
•The Battle of Armageddon takes place
•Antichrist and the False Prophet are thrown into the Lake of Fire.
•And we pick up the story, entering chapter 20.

Let’s look at…
I. Satan’s Temporary Defeat and Binding (Rev. 20:1-3)

Revelation 20:1-3
“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬
Notice, that coming out of the Great Tribulation, not only is the false prophet and the Antichrist sentenced to the Lake of Fire, but then Satan is bound and placed into the Abyss.

JOHN WALVOORD SAYS…“As John witnesses the scene, he observes the angel coming down from heaven possessing the key of “the bottomless pit,” that is, “the abyss” (cf. 9:1, 2, 11; also “the deep,” Luke 8:31; Rom. 10:7). This is the home of demons and unclean spirits.”

Notice here, that the angel will have six responsibilities when dealing with Satan.

(1) to lay hold on the dragon, (2) to bind him for 1, 000 years, (3) to cast him into the abyss, (4) to shut him up, that is, to use the key which will lock up the abyss, (5) to set a seal upon Satan which will render him inactive in his work of deceiving the nations, (6) to loose him after the thousand years.
Walvoord, J. F. (2008). The Revelation of Jesus Christ (pp. 290–310). Galaxie Software.

So, here is what we see…
•Bottomless Pit vs. Hell: The “bottomless pit” (the abyss) is not hell but a temporary prison for Satan.
•Satan’s Confinement: Satan is bound in the abyss for 1,000 years.
•Not Cast into Hell Yet: Satan has one more task before final judgment.

When you get to this point in the story, it begins to get exciting. And here is why…we are about to have our prayers answered.

You see, a prayer you and I have been praying since we were on a team in high school, is about to be fulfilled. In Matthew 6 we have the Lord’s Prayer, the prayer Jesus taught his disciples to pray. I’d like for us to stand together and recite it.  Stand together with me and let’s pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Matthew 6:9-13
“…Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, and ever.”

It’s one of the most subtle parts of the prayer that I want to focus on for a moment. It’s verse 10 — “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Did you know that the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ will actually answer this prayer?
It’s also called the Messianic Age. Now, before we look at the millennial reign of Jesus, let’s first look at this graphic once again, as I want to show you where we are on this timeline.

We are right here at the M1000. We will also cover R — the Rebellion, and the Great White Throne Judgement.

Now that Satan is bound, The Millennial Reign…the Messianic Age…is going to commence. Let’s look at Revelation 20:4-6.

II. The Millennial Reign of Christ and His Saints (Rev. 20:4-6)

Revelation 20:4-6
“Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬‬‬
Now, here’s what’s fascinating. John only gives six verses to this time frame. So, here’s a high-level view of it.

•1,000-Year Reign: The term “thousand years” appears six times in these verses.
•Known as “The Millennium” (Latin: mille - “thousand”; annum - “year”). It is better described as the “Messianic Age,” putting less emphasis on the amount of time, though there is no reason to think it isn’t a literal 1,000 years, but what the age is like.
•In the Messianic Age, there is a “First Resurrection” and a “Second Resurrection.” This is a Literal resurrection of the dead (Rev. 20:5) indicating a physical kingdom on earth.

Now, recall, the church has already been resurrected and is part of the great multitude in heaven. Remember, in chapter 3, the church was promised to be spared the season of wrath.
That’s why we see saints on thrones ruling in verse 4. Then, those who put their faith in Jesus and who did not take the mark of the beast, and were beheaded during the tribulation, these are the ones who are resurrected and will participate in a special role during the Messianic Age.

Notice verse 4 again.

Revelation 20:4
“Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”

From other scriptures, we learn a number of things about this Messianic Age.

What is fulfilled during the millennial reign of Christ?

The Millennial Reign of Jesus in Revelation 20:1-6 is a literal 1,000-year period during which Jesus Christ will:
•return to earth,
•establish a physical kingdom,
•and reign as King.
Jesus will rule from Jerusalem in fulfillment of numerous Old Testament prophecies, and this reign will be a time of unprecedented peace, righteousness, and fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel and the nations.

Let me give you some…

7 Key Features of the Messianic Age
1.Jesus’ Physical Return and Establishment of His Kingdom

Key Features of the Messianic Age
1.Jesus’ Physical Return and Establishment of His Kingdom
•Christ’s return will precede (hence, “pre-millennial”) the Millennium, when He will physically establish His kingdom on earth.

Zechariah 14:4-9
“On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter. And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬‬‬
•Zechariah 14:4–9 captures both the battle of Armageddon and the inauguration of the Messianic Age. Clearly, it will be a different age. Notice it says, “And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.”

Another aspect of the Messianic Age is the…
2.Fulfillment of God’s Promises to Israel

Key Features of the Messianic Age
1.Jesus’ Physical Return and Establishment of His Kingdom
2.Fulfillment of God’s Promises to Israel

•The Millennium will fulfill the promises made to Israel in the covenants, particularly the Abrahamic, Davidic, and New Covenants.
•Abrahamic Covenant: God promised Abraham land, descendants, and blessings to all nations through his lineage. The Millennium is seen as the full realization of this promise (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:18-21).
•Davidic Covenant: God promised David that his descendants would rule on his throne forever. Jesus, as the descendant of David, will fulfill this covenant by ruling as King in the Millennium (2 Samuel 7:12-16; Isaiah 9:6-7).

Notice Isaiah 9:6-7.

Isaiah 9:6-7
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬‬‬
This is the time for the Kingdom to Come and His Will to Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

What other fulfillments of Scripture are taking place in this time?
•New Covenant: The Millennium, or Messianic Age, will also be a time when God fulfills the New Covenant, especially with Israel, giving them new hearts, forgiveness of sins, and a close relationship with God.

Ezekiel 36:24-28
“I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.”

Another aspect of the Messianic Age is the…
3.Jerusalem will be the World’s Center

7 Key Features of the Messianic Age
1.Jesus’ Physical Return and Establishment of His Kingdom
2.Fulfillment of God’s Promises to Israel
3.Jerusalem will be the World’s Center

•Jerusalem will be the political and spiritual center of the world, from where Jesus will rule.
Look at Isaiah 2:2-4.

Isaiah 2:2-4
“It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬‬‬
•This describes a time when “the mountain of the Lord’s house” will be established, and people from all nations will come to learn from the Lord, resulting in global peace.
•Micah 4:1-4 also speaks of nations coming to Jerusalem to be taught by God, and weapons being turned into tools of peace.

The Messianic Age is a time of…
4.Worldwide Peace and Righteousness

7 Key Features of the Messianic Age
1.Jesus’ Physical Return and Establishment of His Kingdom
2.Fulfillment of God’s Promises to Israel
3.Jerusalem will be the World’s Center
4.Worldwide Peace and Righteousness

•The Millennium will be characterized by peace and justice as Jesus reigns with absolute righteousness.
•Isaiah 11:1-9 describes a future time when the Messiah will judge with righteousness, and even the animal kingdom will experience harmony.

Look at Isaiah 11:6-9.

Isaiah 11:6-9
“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬‬‬
•Psalm 72 provides a picture of the reign of a righteous King, who defends the afflicted and brings justice, prosperity, and peace to the earth.

The Messianic Age is a time of…
5.The Restoration of Creation

7 Key Features of the Messianic Age
1.Jesus’ Physical Return and Establishment of His Kingdom
2.Fulfillment of God’s Promises to Israel
3.Jerusalem will be the World’s Center
4.Worldwide Peace and Righteousness
5.The Restoration of Creation

•The Millennium will be a time when the curse on creation is partially lifted, leading to an abundance of productivity and a renewal of the earth.
•Isaiah 35:1-7 speaks of the desert blooming and the wilderness becoming fertile, symbolizing the restoration of the natural world.
•Romans 8:19-22 hints at creation itself waiting for this time of liberation from the effects of sin.

The Messianic Age is a time of…
6.Long Life and Prosperity

2.Fulfillment of God’s Promises to Israel
3.Jerusalem will be the World’s Center
4.Worldwide Peace and Righteousness
5.The Restoration of Creation
6.Long Life and Prosperity

•People in the Millennium will experience long lives and unprecedented prosperity, but mortality will still exist.
•Supporting Scripture: Isaiah 65:20-25 describes people living to old age and enjoying the fruits of their labor without fear, as well as peace in nature.

The Messianic Age is a time of…

4.Worldwide Peace and Righteousness
5.The Restoration of Creation
6.Long Life and Prosperity
7.Gentile Nations Will Pay Tribute to Jesus in Jerusalem

•Zechariah 8:22-23 describes a time when many people from all nations will seek the Lord, asking to be led by the people of Israel.
•Psalm 22:27-28 anticipates all nations turning to the Lord and acknowledging His rule.

Summary of Fulfilled Old Testament Scriptures in the Millennium

The premillennial view sees the Millennial Kingdom as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning:

•A reign of peace: (Isaiah 9:6-7; Micah 4:1-4)
•Restoration of Israel: (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 36:24-28)
•Prosperity and harmony: (Isaiah 11:6-9; 35:1-10)
•A righteous King from David’s line: (2 Samuel 7:12-16; Isaiah 9:6-7)
•Worship of God by all nations: (Isaiah 2:2-4; Zechariah 8:22-23)

But something happens when the Messianic Age comes to an end. Let’s look at verses 7-10.

This is…
III. Satan’s Final Revolt and Defeat (Rev. 20:7-10)

Rev. 20:7-10
“And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬
•Satan’s Release: At the end of the Millennium, Satan is released to lead one last rebellion.
Why is Satan released one last time?

JOHN WALVOORD SAYS: "On being relieved from his confinement, Satan loses no time in resuming his nefarious activities and plunges into his campaign to deceive the nations of the entire earth. These who are tempted are the descendants of the tribulation saints who survive the tribulation and enter the millennium in their natural bodies. B. F. Atkinson believes infants born during the millennium will live to its conclusion and will not be required to make a choice between the devil and Christ until the end. The children of those entering the millennium far outnumber the parents, and undoubtedly the earth is teeming with inhabitants at the conclusion of the thousand-year reign of Christ. Outwardly they have been required to conform to the rule of the king and make a profession of obedience to Christ. In many cases, however, this was mere outward conformity without inward reality, and in their inexperience of real temptation they are easy victims of Satan’s wiles.

Govett suggests four reasons why Satan must be loosed after a thousand years:
(1) to demonstrate that man even under the most favorable circumstances will fall into sin if left to his own choice;
(2) to demonstrate the foreknowledge of God who foretells the acts of men as well as His own acts;
(3) to demonstrate the incurable wickedness of Satan;
 (4) to justify eternal punishment, that is, to show the unchanged character of wicked people even under divine jurisdiction for a long period of time."

•Satan’s Release — Shows the depravity of humanity, even in a perfect environment. This is as close to the Garden of Eden as you will get before the Eternal State with the New Heaven and New Earth.
•Outcome: Satan’s final defeat as he and his followers are quickly judged and cast into the lake of fire.

This rebellion highlights the sinful nature of humanity, proving that true transformation only comes through God’s grace.

The last part of Chapter 20 is the Great White Throne Judgement. I don’t have a lot of time to unpack this, but we will pick up here next week. Let’s read and skip a rock over the Great White Throne Judgment.

IV. The Great White Throne Judgment (Rev. 20:11-15)

Revelation 20:11-15
“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
‭‭‬‬‬‬
•The Final Judgment: The unsaved dead are raised and judged at the Great White Throne.
•Judge: Jesus Christ, given authority to judge by the Father (John 5:22-30).
•Books of Judgment:
•God’s Word: Reveals the truth each sinner rejected (John 12:48).
•Book of Works: Determines the degree of punishment (Matt. 11:20-24).
•Book of Life: Contains names of the redeemed.

Destiny of the Lost:
- The unsaved face the “second death,” cast into the lake of fire.

Hell is a witness to God’s righteousness, humanity’s responsibility, and the severity of sin. Rejection of Christ seals this fate, but salvation is freely available.

V. Invitation to Salvation

•Final Exhortation: Trusting in Jesus brings eternal life and freedom from condemnation.
•Scriptural Assurance: John 5:24 - Belief in Christ moves one from death to life.
Slide: John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

My Friend, come to Christ today. Be saved from final judgment. Be saved front the tribulation. Be saved into a kingdom that does not perish, spoil, or fade.
