Finding Purpose and Direction

Today, we are going to better understand and know what it is to walk in the light of Jesus Christ.
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
What is Jesus Saying?
Some Say, Jesus is simply describing God and He is certainly here claiming to be God.
Here is how the Scripture Describes God:
a.Scripture Describes God as Light:
1 John 1:5
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
Psalm 139:11-13
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
Is Jesus simply saying that He is Light as God is light, or is there something much more specific we are to learn, hear, and understand from Jesus, as the Jews of that day would have understood Him?
Day of Departure of the Feast of Tabernacles— This is a Fall Festival/Harvest Festival; 1 of 3 Festivals where Devout Jew would make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem.
A.C. MEYERS, IN THE EERDMAN’S BIBLE DICTIONARY STATES:
BOOTHS, FEAST OF (Heb. hag̱ hassukkôṯ). One of Israel’s three major feasts, also known as the Feast of Ingathering (Exod. 23:16; 34:22) or the Feast of Tabernacles (2 Chr. 8:13). It began on the fifteenth day of the month of Tishri (mid-October, five days after the Day of Atonement or Tishri 10), at the end of the harvest (Exod. 34:22), and lasted one week (Lev. 23:34).
On the first day the Israelites were to cease from their daily work and proclaim a memorial by means of a holy convocation of trumpets (Lev. 23:35). Then for seven days they were to present burnt offerings (v. 36). After the feast proper (i.e., on the eighth day) they were to enjoy another day of rest and to participate in religious activities while making their final offering (vv. 36, 39). All males (slaves as well) were required to participate in this festival.
For the entire length of this feast the Israelites were enjoined to live in booths (Lev. 23:42, Heb. sukkōṯ) made from branches of palm trees, “boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook” (v. 40), which were woven together. This was to be a reminder of the Lord’s care and protection (cf. Ps. 27:5) during their wilderness wanderings (vv. 32–43) and his promise to protect them in the future, especially concerning their harvests (Deut. 16:15).
Myers, A. C. (1987). BOOTHS,. In The Eerdmans Bible dictionary (p. 167). Eerdmans.
Jesus arrives early, at Dawn (John 8:1) and is teaching in the Court of the Women, where the treasury is kept.
In this court, during the festival, TWO GREAT CANDELABRAS are lit. These stand 75ft. High, AND THEY can be seen from any point in the city.
At this festival, these Two Candelabras signify the Cloud and the Pillar of Fire from the wilderness journey.
It is here that Jesus says…
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Consider the Context and the timing!
Feast is wrapping up, and thousands of people will begin a pilgrimage that day. They will begin to walk.
Jesus is using the celebration of that week, the celebration of:
•God’s presence,
•God’s protection,
•God’s purpose,
•and God’s providence,
to show them that He is the God who led the nation of Israel, with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
Jesus is also saying that just as He did that for Israel in the Wilderness, He wants to do that for all the nations as well.
Let’s consider these ideas of:
The Light of the World
1.God’s Presence and Protection
2.God’s Purpose
3.God’s Providence
I. I am God’s Presence and God’s Protection
Exodus 13:21-22
21 By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.
a.God’s Presence – God manifest His presence with Israel in the pillar of Cloud by day and pillar of fire by night.
Exodus 33:12-14
12 Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.” 14 The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
a.The Cloud and Fire were also the Protection of God
i.Consider the elements of the wilderness:
1. 120 degree days in the desert
2.Freezing cold nights
a.Cloud – a Covering to protect the people
b.Fire – A way to keep them warm and illuminate the night.
Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
Do you hear the confidence of the Psalm writer? Because God is my light, because he is my salvation, I don’t need to fear.
Jesus is claiming to be the God of the cloud and fire. He is saying, if you have a relationship with me, you will never walk in darkness, but in light, and in light, there is Great Confidence!
When you walk in darkness, you don’t have a confidence, do you? No, you stumble, you are afraid.
When you are in complete darkness, you don’t feel safe, or that God is near. Yet, when you have a relationship with Christ, you realize that no matter what comes your way, you are in his hands.
Yes, you may still be subject to tragic death like someone who loses their life to cancer or in an automobile accident. You are still subject to the order of this world!
But with a relationship with Jesus Christ, you can face the order of this world with confidence that nothing will touch me that He isn’t aware of or can’t overcome. It is a confidence that confesses, “I am safe in his arms, no matter what comes my way.”
Believer, are you walking in the light of His presence and protection?
Memorize Psalm 27:1 this week:
Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear. The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?
Transition: Jesus declares I am the Light of the World. He is saying, “I am God’s presence and protection.”
Notice also what He is saying…I am God’s Purpose for the Nations.
The Light of the World
1.God’s Presence and Protection
2.God’s Purpose
3.God’s Providence
II. I am God’s Purpose for the Nations
When Jesus says, I am the Light of the World, He is also saying, I am God’s Purpose for the Nations!
Let’s Read Exodus 6:2-8:
Exodus 6:2-8
2 God also said to Moses, “I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they lived as aliens. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.’”
Q: What was God’s purpose for the cloud and the fire?
A: To Deliver the people from Bondage!
More than that, it was to fulfill the covenant promise to Abraham!
What was the Covenant Promise to Abraham? You will be the Father of Many Nations! (Genesis 12)
•Delivering Israel from Bondage and slavery in Egypt, was a part of God’s redemptive plan for the nations as a whole.
Jesus, was to not only deliver Israel from bondage, but the Gentiles as well.
Look at Isaiah 42:6-7 regarding Jesus.
Isaiah 42:6-7
6 “I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
Jesus also says to us in the New Testament, in Matthew 5 to the nation of Israel,
Matthew 5:14-16
“14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
What is Jesus saying? I am the Light! I am God’s redemptive purpose for the Nations!
You, if you are in me, have received my light. You are to carry my light to others! This was God’s redemptive purpose all along!
You are to let your light shine – you are to be the city on the Hill that shines its light that cannot be hidden!
Paul now says to us believers in Ephesians 5:8…
Ephesians 5:8
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.”
You see, our exposure to the light, our coming to know and follow Christ, makes us possessors and reflectors of His light.
You could equate us with the moon. We are the moon. We have no light in and of ourselves. But now that we follow Christ, we are in the light!
•You see, his purpose for us is to let our light shine brightly before all men!
•His purpose for us is to be a beacon of light to the nations!
•His purpose for us is to live as children of light, living in all goodness, righteousness, and truth, finding out what pleases the Lord!
He wants us to walk as Carriers of His light, stating over and over again, “Jesus is God’s purpose for the nations!”
Q: AND, why is He God’s purpose for the nations?
A: Because He wants to deliver people from bondage—the bondage of sin that leads to condemnation and utter darkness!
Remember, the people are celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles, commemorating the time in the wilderness. They are living in tents or booths. He has led them out of bondage in Egypt…AND He was leading them to the Promise Land.
Transition: So, let’s also see, that when Jesus says, “I am the light of the world, He is also saying, “I am God’s Providence.”
The Light of the World
1.God’s Presence and Protection
2.God’s Purpose
3.God’s Providence
III. I am God’s Providence
THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD IS GOD’S SOVEREIGN LEADERSHIP.
This has to do with God moving as He wants to move and doing what He wants to do in our lives..
Look at His providential leadership in the cloud and fire:
Numbers 9:15-23
15 On the day the tabernacle, the Tent of the Testimony, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the Tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. 18 At the LORD’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the LORD’s order and did not set out. 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the LORD’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the LORD’s command they encamped, and at the LORD’s command they set out. They obeyed the LORD’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.
Remember, we are talking about God’s Providence…God’s Sovereign Leadership. So, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out! And when the cloud didn’t lift, they stayed put.
Sometimes it would just stay in place for one night and they would pick up and move the next day. Other times, it would extend.
It was the fiery cloud…the presence that brought protection and purpose for them, that also led them.
When Jesus says, “I am the light of the world,” He is saying, I am God’s providential leadership for you.
Look at John 8:12 again.
John 8:12
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Just as Israel followed the cloud by day and fiery cloud by night, John 8:12 invites us to follow Jesus. It tells us to walk in His light, for He is the light of life.
The light of life leads me, and I follow. His word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, leading me, showing me the right way, the right path, the right solution to difficult relationships.
The question is, “Will I follow His leading!”
Let me leave you with this verse. It is my wife’s favorite set of verses, and it talks about our path.
The verses are Proverbs 3:5-6. They state,
Proverbs 3:5-6
“5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
