Flourishing Worship: Ascribe to the Lord Glory

Mary Ellen Ermis September 19, 2022 Devotionals, cityrise, houston, Roger Patterson, The Flourishing Life Journey,

Take Fundamental Steps

Welcome to the Flourishing Worship Daily Devotional. I’m excited to share these devotionals with you over the next four weeks as we look at how we move from brokenness to flourishing. In my own life, I have been seeking out my next step as a husband, father, and pastor. I feel the weight of leading well, and I don’t want to become stagnant for the roles and responsibilities I have.

When I train with Brent Gallagher at Avenu Fitness, or when I get on my Peloton treadmill, the trainers speaking into my life are challenging me to take another step, do another rep, and seek progress, not perfection. To flourish, we must do the right, simple, fundamental things intentionally. As a follower of Jesus, we are invited to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. We are invited to do the most fundamental thing we have been created to do – lift our hearts to God in praise.

These Monday through Friday devotionals have been written and recorded by staff members and some of our lay leaders. I pray that these fresh thoughts and testimonies will assist you in your journey to flourish in the abundant life of Jesus. Just scroll below to see or read the devotional for today. Additionally, there will be stories that inspire, songs that will assist, and curriculum that you can do on your own, with your family, with a friend, or with your Community Group.

May you flourish today!

Day 1 – Ascribe to the Lord Glory

Psalm 29:2 “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.”

The Psalmist seems to have experienced God’s goodness in some powerful way when he wrote this. To “ascribe” means to attribute or credit someone with something. The Psalmist ascribes glory by writing this Psalm and singing it in the congregation.

Singing to God is one powerful way to ascribe glory to Him for what He has done in our lives. But how else can we ascribe glory to God? How can we “worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness?”

I suggest that you spend some time thinking about all the good things God has done in your life. Where have you seen His grace? When was the last time you experienced that grace? Maybe you saw Him provide something that you needed. Maybe He answered a prayer you’d been praying for a long time. Maybe you are thankful for another day of sunshine and health in your life. Write it down. Thank Him for His blessing and provision, and “ascribe the glory due His name.”

Finally, if you’ve experienced God’s grace in your life today, consider some way you can “pay it forward” as a way to bring Him glory and worship His name in action.

Reflect: How can you consciously use your words, actions and deeds to “ascribe” – or declare – all the good things God has done in your life? If you’ve experienced God’s grace in a new way, how will you “pay it forward” today?

Fight For You

“You fought for me . . . When I was blind but now I see.” This powerful anthem originally created by Worship Pastor Aaron Senseman for our Fight For It campaign has become a mainstay in our repertoire. It’s an awesome testimony of God’s care for His people and His willingness to fight for us and our willingness to fight for God and for the things in life that He cares about.

Session 1 – What is Worship?

After Justin, one of our staff members, shares on how to be prepared to engage in worship on a Sunday morning, Pastor Roger talks about the act of worship. What is it? How do you know if you’re doing it? Jesus discussed the same topic with a Samaritan woman at a well outside Sychar. In that conversation, Jesus explained that true worship is done “in spirit and in truth.” This means, among other things, that it is internal and real. Pastor Roger explains further.
